Abstract

Fasting, or Upavasa, is a fundamental practice in Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine

from India, which promotes detoxification, balance, and overall health. Unlike modern

interpretations of fasting, which often focus on weight loss, Ayurveda approaches fasting as a

holistic healing tool aimed at restoring harmony within the body and mind. Upavasa is

believed to activate the body's self-healing mechanisms by allowing the digestive system to

rest, cleanse toxins (ama), and enhance metabolic function. In Ayurveda, fasting is not just

about abstaining from food but involves a detailed understanding of an individual’s

constitution (Prakriti), current imbalances (Vikriti), and the seasonal and environmental

factors that influence health. This article explores the role of Upavasa in Ayurveda, detailing

its physiological benefits, therapeutic uses, and guidelines for safe and effective practice.

Additionally, it highlights how fasting can support the detoxification process, improve

digestive health, and foster spiritual well-being. Through this comprehensive review, we aim

to present the relevance of Upavasa in modern health practices and its potential as an

important tool for preventive and therapeutic care.
